40 Day Fast, My Journey

gabriel joseph ynostroza

40 days ago, I committed to a 40-day fast. I am grateful I set out on this endeavor to reap the benefits physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Funny enough, just a few weeks before deciding on the fast, I had been reviewing and going deeper into understanding the physical and spiritual benefits of fasting.

Physical benefits of fasting: clears out old cells (autophagy), resets the immune system, boosts brain function, slows aging, and resets all organs.

One day, knowing everything happens for a reason, my friend mentioned she was going to do a 40-day liquid fast. I was inspired and text her it was awesome she was doing this. She messaged back I should do it with her, and I immediately responded, “I’m ready!”

Going back just a week before, I had increased my daily meditation to 3 hours. I had deepened my kundalini yoga meditations and breathwork. So the decision to commit to this fast was supported by my current state of mind. I feel confident to say my practices had prepared my mental space in such a way that this journey was the next step in my spiritual growth.

Being the planner I am, I wrote up my schedule. Intuitively, I knew I needed to listen to my body and what it needed.

My 40-day fast schedule:

Week 1: 1 juice a day allowed, black coffee, water, herbal teas, minerals (sea moss, liquid, or Celtic sea salt)

Week 2: black coffee or green tea, water, herbal teas, minerals (liquid or sea salt)

Week 3: black coffee or green tea, water, minerals

Week 4: water only

Week 5: water only (4 days), then add minerals (3 days)

Week 6 (5 days): water only, minerals

I have dealt with digestive issues and even through the years of repair and committed eating habits, I knew energetic patterns still needed to be completely cleared. I realized this cleanse + fast would support a complete overhaul of my system.

The first few weeks went by rather smoothly. I did recognize my body was detoxing quickly and when I intuitively checked in, I knew my body was going through a parasitic detox. On day 16, I decided to do a celery juice cleanse to support a flush out. I was also drinking soursop leaf tea which is antimicrobial and anti-parasitic to support the detox.

By week 4, I lost 25 lbs. I accepted this loss in fat, inflammation, and muscle mass and recognized the work I was doing was giving my body the total reset it needed. This fast was more than a purge, it was also riding subconscious beliefs, thoughts, and emotions including those I had about my body and the expectations I have always put on myself. This shift in consciousness gave me a greater appreciation and love for my body.

Our digestion feeds the subconscious. We hold many energetic patterns through our second brain, gut microbiome, and these patterns influence our minds. It’s why we get triggered to choose certain foods and hold onto excess weight.

We pleasure seek food all the time and for me the old patterns of unhealthy eating needed to be released during this fast. Letting go of attachment to food, allowed my subconscious mind to reprogram— with the help of meditation of course.

We use a lot of energy in the gut when consuming foods. If the foods we eat are far from nature, then it takes our system even more energy to process. When we fast, our body is freed up from this work. On average I slept 3-5 hours a night! I enjoyed experiencing this vitality.

Earlier on in the fast, the first two weeks or so, I did workout and stretched regularly. As the fast went on, I kept listening to my body and would do movements, stretches, and some strength training outside in the Sun. Finally, in the last few weeks, I mainly stretched and gave my body the rest it needed.

For the last 3 weeks of the fast, I just drank water and added in trace minerals the last week. I sustained and increased my energy every day with a deepened connection to the forces of nature– the Sun, Earth, air, and water.

As for water, when on a water fast especially, we want to consume water that is structured and as close to nature as possible. I wish I lived near a natural spring but instead, I was fortunate to drink the next closest thing. My source of water was a Kangen machine, which provides structured hydrogen water, and drinking this right from the source every day supported my body with proper hydration.

Each day, after my morning meditation practice, I’d go outside for breathwork and soak up the Sun for at least 1 hour. I would consciously connect with the Sun and the air I was breathing. I’d ask for the energy, support, and power my body, mind, and spirit needed. I truly sustained the energy I needed with nature.

Some days, my body's detoxing required more time spent outdoors. I would go to the park grounding on the grass, use breathwork, and connect deeply with the elements. Afterward, I would be at peace with my mind and body, leaving feeling nurtured and energetic.

Spiritual benefits of fasting: raises your frequency, supports kundalini energy to rise, supports DNA activation, and allows prana/ life force to move where it's needed.

My 40-day journey was an initiation. It taught me more about myself and my resilience, strength, and integrity to live in alignment with a deepened connection to spirit. With the support of nature, meditations, breathwork, and an expanded connection with higher consciousness, I was able to use this time to heal and elevate. I let go of the energetic trauma I held in my body and renewed my appreciation of life. This journey led me to the deepest connection with my spirit, communion with all that is in nature, life without craving, and joy for high vibrational potential. It was a transformational experience.
